It's fitting that Jerry L. Wheeler's review of Queerly Beloved: A Love Story Across Genders in Out in Print starts with a tribute to the late Matt Kailey. As Jacob wrote for The Advocate magazine, Matt made an indelible impact on his life, even though Jacob never met him in person. Matt's own memoir, Just Add Hormones, helped jacob navigate his own transition. In short, Matt helped Jacob become the man he is today.

After an obiturary for Matt, Wheeler dives into Queerly Beloved, explaining that the memoir is "less a story about Jacob’s transition than it is a tribute to commitment and prolonging a lifelong relationship despite its permutations."

While he ponders if more could have been revealed about Jacob and Diane's relationship and transition, he concludes, "What’s in Queerly Beloved is both frank and informative, as readable as it is important."
